Patron Statement

During my time as Artistic Director of Northern Stage, Newcastle I was able to get to know the work of Open Clasp and I was inspired and moved both by their dedication and by the theatre they make. I continue to follow their progress with real interest.

This is a company that does something which is not only unique, entertaining and engaging but also incredibly important. They tell stories that need to be heard and they allow their audiences to see the world through unexpected eyes.

Their work gives voice to women who are usually ignored or sidelined, and the process by which these often vulnerable women are involved empowers them to understand that their stories matter, that their stories can make others laugh as well as cry .  And Open Clasp do all this with integrity, determination and artistic ambition. I take my hat off to the whole team and am very proud to be their Patron.
