Catrina McHugh: ‘I want Open Clasp plays to stay with people, become part of their DNA’

Artistic Director and Writer, Catrina McHugh MBE, met with Lyn Gardner to talk about co-creation, Mycelial in association with Northern Stage and how she wants audiences to feel when they leave the auditorium.

Four years in the making (like so much theatre, it was hit by the pandemic), it ties together the differing experiences of sex workers from New Zealand (where the buying and selling of sex has been decriminalised since 2003), Ireland (where buying sex was criminalised in 2017) and the UK, where most of the practices surrounding sex work, such as soliciting for sex on the street or running a brothel, remain illegal. The title – taken from a piece of writing by one of the women that emerged from the creative process – refers to the underground networks of fungal systems that support and talk to each other and the natural world.
